How to Create Your Own Custom Document in Procreate

Tired of resizing your canvas every time you start a project in Procreate? Save time by creating your own custom document. In just a few simple steps, you can set your ideal canvas size and resolution—and reuse it whenever you need.

Step 1: Open Procreate and Head to the Gallery

Start by launching the Procreate app on your iPad. You’ll land in the Gallery View, where all your artwork is displayed.

Step 2: Tap the “+” Icon

Click on the plus sign in the gallery (+), a drop-down menu in the top-right corner of the screen, to open the canvas size menu.

Step 3: Select “New Canvas”

At the top of the list, tap “New Canvas”. This allows you to set custom dimensions for your document.

Step 4: Enter Your Custom Settings

In the popup window, you can choose any unit to make a new document. My document preferences are usually in pixels and no less than 3000 x 3000 pixels at 300 dpi. The higher the dpi in the dimensions of the canvas, the less layers you will have available to work with.

Width and height (choose units: pixels, inches, cm, or mm)

DPI (300 is ideal for print; 72–150 for digital)

Optional: Tap “Color Profile” or “Time-lapse Settings” if needed

Step 5: Tap “Create”

Once your settings are ready, tap the “Create” button in the upper-right corner. Your new custom canvas will open instantly (You will see a blank canvas on your dashboard).

Step 6: Save It as a Reusable Preset

After creating the canvas, go back to the “+” menu, swipe left on your new custom size, and tap “Edit” to rename it. This saves it for future use—no need to re-enter settings! Click done.
