I’m excited to share that I recently won an art award from the Art Guild in Town for a piece I submitted to their themed exhibit. The challenge was to create something inspired by the fun side of the 1970s. For me, that decade brings back vivid memories of my childhood.
One of my strongest connections to the ’70s comes from flipping through fashion magazines my mother kept in stacks. She used them as references for her sewing business, and I was fascinated by the bold styles—especially the greens, reds, and the unforgettable platform shoes and boots. There seemed to be no limits on color or pattern, which became a major source of inspiration for this piece.
Beyond fashion, I also associate the ’70s with colorful surface design—vibrant florals, playful rainbows, stylized clouds, and whimsical nature motifs. These patterns gave off a fun-loving, carefree energy that captured the spirit of the time. I combined these two aspects—fashion and surface design—into my painting, which I titled “Boots for Walking.”
This piece is a tribute to both my childhood memories and the artistic freedom of the era. Winning the award made the experience even more meaningful, and I’m grateful to the Art Guild for the opportunity to celebrate the decade through my art.
